High School (9-12)

Friendship Public Charter School offers grades nine to 12 at its Collegiate Academy high school.

Beginning in school year 2004-2005, Collegiate Academy converted to a 90-minute-block schedule with four periods from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The new schedule emphasizes intensive classroom instruction in English and math.

  • 90 minutes of English and math everyday for 9th and 10th grades
  • 90 minutes of English and math everyday for 11th and 12th grades
  • Advance placement (AP) classes meet everyday for 90 minutes for the entire school year
  • Science, social studies, electives, world language and career courses meet 90 minutes everyday for a semester

Mathematics

Collegiate utilizes the Prentice Hall Mathematics curriculum. In the 9th grade, based on diagnostic tests, students take Algebra I Part 1, Algebra I Part 2 or Algebra 1 and Geometry. Students scoring below 5th grade level are placed in a Transitions math class built on the Saxon mathematics curriculum. Mathematics courses are offered based on the following course options listed in sequence:

  • Algebra I and Honors Algebra I
  • Geometry and Honors Geometry
  • Algebra II/Trigonometry
  • Pre-Calculus
  • AP Calculus
  • AP Computer Science

Science

Collegiate offers a range of science courses including Physical and Earth Science for 9th grade, Biology for 10th grade and Chemistry for 11th grade. Environmental Science, Microbiology, College Physics and AP Biology are offered in the 12th grade.

History and Economics

Ninth grade examines D.C. Government and History, and 10th grade World History or AP World History. Eleventh grade is offered U.S. History , AP U.S. History, or Early College U.S. History I and II. Twelfth grade takes Economics.

Literature and Language Arts

Ninth grade examines literary genres. Tenth grade  examines world literature, focusing on historical and regional surveys from each of the major regions. Eleventh and 12th grades are offered courses in American Literature, British Literature or Early College Composition I and II, AP Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition.

Humanities

Early College 11th and 12th graders are offered two courses in philosophy, namely, Logic, and Critical Reasoning.

In addition to courses in core academic areas, students at the high school level are provided the opportunity to participate in the high school Career Academies.

Arts and Communications Academy

The Arts and Communications Academy recognizes that students must be allowed to express themselves creatively. Course offerings are grouped in three majors: Communications, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

Engineering and Technology Academy

The Engineering and Technology Academy is designed to prepare students for careers in engineering, networking, programming, software development and architectural design. Course offerings are grouped in two majors: Cisco Networking Engineer and Engineering.
